BENEFIT


Monitor Backups

Make
sure backups are starting and completing as scheduled. 
Monitor and report to management on any exceptions
found.

 

Ensure
that business is not interrupted in case of data loss.

Check
Anti-Virus

Make
sure current anti-virus software and pattern files are
loaded.  Make sure virus scans are scheduled and running
at least weekly.  Make sure real-time file and e-mail
scanning is operational.  Check scan history for unusual
activity.

 

Avoid
business delays and data-loss  due to virus or worm
attack.

Update
Windows

Ensure
operating system is updated with critical and
recommended patches.

 

Avoid
downtime from Windows defects, viruses, hackers and
other vulnerabilities.

 

Test
Backups


Randomly restore some important files to verify backup
integrity.

Ensure
that business is not interrupted in case of data loss.

 

Update
the Emergency Repair Disk

 

Create
and maintain a Windows emergency repair disk (ERD) for
each PC and server.

Avoid
downtime from catastrophic hardware or software failure.


Monitor Event Logs

Check
for Windows and application problems not apparent during
normal operation of PCs and servers.

Avoid
downtime from undetected Windows and application
problems.

 

Test
UPS

Test
the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to ensure proper
operation during a power failure.


Prevent downtime from file corruption or hardware
failure due to sudden system shutdown.

 

Manage
Storage


Monitor and test for sufficient memory and disk
resources, including disk space.  Make sure disk
defragment and scandisk is scheduled at least weekly. 
Check for excessive disk errors during last scan.


Increase productivity and prevent downtime from a full,
fragmented or failing disk drive.


Identify Device Conflicts

 

Check
device manager for driver conflicts and hardware errors.

Avoid
downtime from a hardware error or configuration problem.

Clean
and adjust

Clean
dust from fans, processor, and power supply.  Ensure
mouse and keyboard operate properly.  Adjust monitor
settings as needed.

 

Avoid
downtime and increase system life due to heat build up. 
Avoid frustration from malfunctioning peripherals.

 

Check
Connections

Check
all external and internal cables and connectors for
looseness, broken pins and failing or broken wires.

 

Avoid
downtime from intermittent or total PC or peripheral
failure due to loose, broken or failing connections.
